BIM in Building Services Design Project Targeted Outcomes

This assessment is designed to assess students' achievement of the following Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):

1. Establish building services systems on existing building model;

2. Apply BIM software in simulation, calculation and presentation of HVAC system design;

3. Apply BIM software in calculation and presentation of electrical services and plumbing design;

4. Synthesis and coordinate combined services systems by BIM software

Guidelines/Requirements

Each group of students (3 or 4 students) should design the building services systems of one floor (3/F) of a proposed office building in Hong Kong. Each group should submit a written report to cover the work done in a specific building services systems project design with BIM.

The following building services systems should be included in the BIM model:

- Lighting system (including lux level calculation by BIM)
- HVAC air side system (including cooling load analysis and duct sizing by BIM)
- sprinkler system
- necessary plumbing pipework

Submission

Both hardcopy of report and softcopy of BIM files (including the file of linked model) in CD rom should be submitted.

Design Report
The report should be in max. 10 pages excluding appendices. Individual input with rough percentage contributions in the project might be included in the cover page if appropriate. The following contents are suggested for the design report (but not exhaustive):

a. Introduction

b. Background information - e.g. location, usage, tenants, building type, etc.

c. Design criteria - e.g. in/outdoor design conditions, fresh air requirements, design lux level, sprinkler OH type, etc.

d. Summary table of simulation Results
- Lux level
- Cooling load analysis
- Duct sizing analysis

e. Description of the different BS systems - e.g. system selection, design consideration, description, etc.

f. Coordination of BS systems
- Arrangement of different BS systems
- Solving design conflict (Detailed illustration of at least 3 cases of design conflicts and the respective solutions in both sectional and 3D drawings)

g. Conclusion

h. Appendix

i. Design drawings:
- Scaled layout plan drawings of different services
- Combined services drawings
- Sectional drawings in congested areas
- 3D drawing of BS systems.
ii. Simulation results
iii. Reference
iv. etc
