Assignment: Residential Lighting and Electrical Design

OBJECTIVES - Understand the lighting design in a residential project Develop the selection of light fixtures for the project Plan the basic lighting requirements for residential spaces

OUTCOME - Research and identify different types of lighting sources, devices, systems and fixtures

Describe the advantages and disadvantages of lighting sources Describe principles needed to measure and calculate the quality and amount of light required for residential and commercial spaces

Plan effective lighting layouts for residential and office projects

TASKS - Develop the lighting design for the residential project given Draw a floor plan and a reflected ceiling plan

Select the different lighting fixture required in the project Produce a report with drawings and lighting charts

Your client is a single male professional with a sculpture collection that he wishes to display prominently and who entertains small groups of friends on occasion and desires a space to accommodate such gatherings in an intimate but dramatic environment.

The residential unit comprises a Living, Dining, Kitchen, Laundry/ Yard/ Master Bedroom, Guest Bedroom, Study (versatile room), Master Bathroom and Guest Bathroom.

Produce the following:

1. Reflected Ceiling Plan in 1:75 or 1: 50 scale
2. Lighting Legend and Schedule
3. Floor plan with furniture, lighting points and power-points
4. Technical data of lamps and luminaries.
5. Images of the effects that you intend to achieve for the spaces

In addition, your submission should demonstrate an appreciation of the qualitative and quantitative aspects of good lighting design. (show photos)

The qualitative aspect has to do with ensuring that the space has a pleasing feel and ambience. It is the artistic interspersing of light and shadow, of illumination and darkness, of figure and form.

The quantitative aspect revolves around making sure that there is adequate light for the task at hand.
