Assignment- Design Project

The purpose of this education is to prepare for a professional career. Therefore, ALL assignments are expected to have a professional presentation. This major assignment provides an opportunity for students to explore common industrial manufacturing processes, and the engineering documentation necessary to support manufacturing.

Refer to the syllabus, the Tips for Professional Presentation, and the Scribbler's note. (You may also find it helpful to refer to the department's Language Skills Handbook, in particular the Written Reports page;

Description:

Students will submit a complete project package for a product of their choice to demonstrate their knowledge of engineering design concepts and practices and the various manufacturing production processes.

Objective:

This design project shall:

1. Reinforce concepts such as Concurrent Engineering, Design For Manufacture (DFM) techniques, and engineering document preparation (drawings and reports).

2. Demonstrate students' understanding of the various manufacturing production processes and how these processes impact design decisions and parameters.

3. Provide an opportunity for students to hone their communication skills by making technical drawings, reports, & presentations.

Documentation requirements:

Submit a product design package consisting of the following items:

1. a Project Cover Letter
2. a Project Master List (to include):

• Page 1: (Cover) Product title, Doc. No. & Rev. Date, Name(s) & titles
• Page 2: Log of Revisions (typically blank for this class)
• Page 3: Listing of all applicable Engineering Drawings
• Page 4: Listing of all applicable Engineering Reports

NOTE: All engineering drawings and reports are to be referenced by a Document No., a Revision No., a Revision Date, Document Title, and (if applicable) ECOs.

3. Applicable Engineering Reports to include, but not limited to, the following:

• a Manufacturing Plan with process flow diagrams
• Product Description and Specifications;

o Installation, assembly, test, and inspection procedures and operations instructions (as required).

4. Applicable Engineering Drawings to include, but not limited to, the following:

• a product Installation sketch or drawing (if applicable);
• a product Assembly drawing;
• three or more Detail drawings of the individual items to be manufactured;

o schematic, shop floor layout, etc. drawings (as required or as desired).

5. Appropriate vendor specifications & literature (as required or as desired).

Due Dates
16 April

Project Requirements:

Each project must meet the following criteria:

1. Consist of at least three, separate manufactured parts (which may be assembled as desired). "Manufactured parts" are defined as parts which, for the purposes of this project, will not be available for purchase through an off site vendor; i.e.: the part must be designed & fabricated.

2. Use at least four of the six secondary processes (casting/molding, forming, separating, assembling, finishing, conditioning). Any one discrete, manufactured part can undergo four secondary processing steps and still meet the above requirement. However, the other, two discrete parts also have to be designed and manufactured using at least one secondary process.
