Assessment

Learning Outcomes

To successfully complete this unityou should be able to

1. identify and critically analyse end-user energy services needs in a range of building contexts.

2. formulate and evaluate a range of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies and strategies to optimise the energy performance of a range of new and existing building types.

3. demonstrategroup and collaborative skills in the development and communication of action proposals for energy optimisation of a specific building / urban context

4. demonstrateknowledge of and familiarity with energy systems modelling tools and building performance simulation tools.

5. demonstratea high level of oral and written English through a range of communication media.

Assessment: this is a supplementary assignment.

1. For each of the following building types, list the TOP 3energy services (ranked in order of their share of total energy consumption) for the building types mentioned. Provide at least one reference for where this information has been sourced. Note that information should be from a source that is reputable, current and reliable.
a. Australian Residential Buildings (national average)
b. Australian Office Buildings (national average)
c. Australian Universities (national average)

2. Assume that your company is given the task of designing one of these buildings types in Townsville. Using meteorological data from the Townsville BOM site, develop a monthly climate table that includes key weather data such as temperature (minimum, maximum, average), relative humidity, solar radiation, precipitation, cloud cover, sunshine hours and wind speed and direction. Write a short description of the climate and the key climatic conditions that will need to be considered for optimising the energy performance of your selected building type.

3. Select one of the building types mentioned in Question 1. For this building type:

a. Select a definition of Net Zero Energy that you think would be appropriate to adopt for the Townsville region. Give the definition, the reference, and the reason why you think this is appropriate for this building type and this region.

b. For this same building type, select an energy rating tool that your company could use to model the energy use of the building you design. Give the name of the tool, the URL, the tools key features and reasons why you think this tool is appropriate for this purpose.

c. Outline the strategy that you will adapt to achieve Net Zero Energy for your selected building type. This strategy should include:
i. approaches to optimising the building envelope for this climate
ii. approaches to optimising the efficiency of building appliances and fitout
iii. approaches to onsite renewable energy
Note: references should be included where appropriate.
