Antennas and Wave Propagation Fall 2016 Project: Design of a Microwave Link

Objective:

To design a microwave link to connect a mobile switching center (MSC) and a base station controller (BSC) 16 km apart. The line of sight (LOS) profile between the two is provided in Table 1.

Design requirements:

1. Design frequency - between 2 and 6 GHz. [For selecting the exact operating frequency for the mobile service refer to the TRA document "National Spectrum Allocations and Assignment Plan".]

2. Maximum allowable radiated power - ERP should not exceed 50 kW [Refer to TRA document "Regulation Organizing the Registration and Utilization of Frequencies and Radio Equipment and Their Pricing" for pricing.]

3. Cable length is the antenna height plus 10 m using SMA connectors at both ends.

4. Received power should not fall below 0.2 μW.

5. Antenna beam widths in the elevation and azimuth planes not to exceed 20o.

Scope:

Having stated the purpose of link, the design is expected to cover

  • the criteria for selecting the transmitter and receiver towers and repeaters (if required) and respective heights
  • the exact frequency
  • the type and antenna (polarization, gain, VSWR, beam width, ...) antennas to use
  • a complete link budget analysis
  • environmental and health impact considerations in siting the antennas

Report specifications:

Line spacing: 1.5

Font type: New Times Roman Font size: 12 points

Report should be between 8 to 12 pages.
