Assignment Task/title: Gas Turbine Performance

Demonstrate an understanding of the operating characteristics of air intakes, compressors and combustors as used in aircraft gas turbines.

Part 1 - Air intakes

You are to:

  • Describe the function of subsonic air intakes.
  • Describe the function of a supersonic air intake.
  • Explain how the formation of shock waves can influence their design and performance.
  • Include and refer to examples from service.

Part 2 - Compressors

You are to:

Describe the role of the rotor and stator.

Explain the nature and cause of compressor stall and surge.

Explain how surge can be prevented by using the following methods:

  • Variable inlet guide vanes
  • Variable stators
  • Bleed valves
  • Multi-shafting

Part 3 - Combustors

You are to:

  • Describe the main types of combustor used in aircraft gas turbine engines.
  • Compare their operating characteristics.
  • Describe the airflow pattern through a typical cannular combustor.
  • Explain the function of the simplex type burner, and suggest why the duplex burner was developed.

Report - The assignment is to be:

  • Written in formal report style, and include a content page, indicating the different report chapters and sections, an introduction and a conclusion
