A dust laden gas stream (predominantly nitrogen) is to be cleaned. The options available are: Stairmand High Efficiency or Stairmand High Rate Cyclones (operating in series or in parallel)or an ESP. Suggest suitable configurations for the process specification shown overleaf. Be sure to use the data corresponding to your name.

It is not required to achieve 100% efficiency - it is however beneficial to come up with designs that achieve high efficiency while balancing the competing demands of operating costs and complexity (capital costs). You should explore the possibilities and make recommendations based on likely performance.

Basic calculations are provided in the accompanying spreadsheet (IGDC2 Coursework Calcs). This considers identical cyclones in series or parallel. Each of the worksheets is locked apart from the cells indicated in RED BOLD. You are free to use this spreadsheetby inputting your values to these unprotected cells. The worksheet protection is not password protected if you need to change the spreadsheets to modify the calculations or to try more exotic configurations. Please let me know as soon as possible if you come across any errors or issues with the spreadsheet.

You are required to show calculation details, explanation of assumptions and design constraints for one parallel cyclone configuration, oneseries cyclone configurationand the ESPonly. You will however need to present and compare the results from a range of configurations in a manner appropriate to support your discussion and conclusions, including all factors that you consider important in the selection.
