The first thing you shall need to step up internet is to know exactly what kind of internet you want to have at home I believe if you are going to have a laptop as well as a desktop you should have WiFi setup as well as a DSL modem which also comes in handy for back up if the wifi were to run out or go out of order or vice versa for the dsl modem. I also believe for busy at home or mobile office people should have hotspot from their own mobile carrier which charges a monthly fee but does come in handy. 

2. Amazon Cloud Drive Which includes 5GB free space and can be used on almost all devices and IOS and other gadgets. 

Apple iCloud which you can automatically have when you have a mac or iphone device

3. As far as Internet protection I believe all modems should be private with a password only you have access to.

AVG anti-Virus which is free but protect your device or desktop a whole lot.

I also believe changing password every so often is not a bad idea to keep hackers away
