Task 1. Individual Written Report

Scenario The reflective learning journal is a piece of writing which allows learners to record thoughts and insights about their own learning experiences. It encourages learners to review and consolidate their learning, to evaluate performance, to plan future learning based on past learning experience. In this way, learners become capable of taking charge of their own learning, and eventually developing into independent lifelong learners.

The term “Reflection” has been used widely and in academic disciplines. It simply means the process of thinking deeply with one’s awareness and conscious effort on an issue or event. The product of such a highly engaged cognitive process would be informed insights, strategies, plans and predictions on the issue one vigorously ponders upon.

Learners who write up their reflective journal regularly, find in it a personal space to keep records of their own ideas and thoughts, and these thoughts are useful to them to come up with solutions and novel approaches to get around problems encountered in their course of learning. Since starting your present Personal and Professional Development lessons, you have been introduced to different approaches to self-managed learning, its benefits and ways in which lifelong learning in personal and professional contexts can be encouraged.

Using your current job role or work placement, you are required to keep a Reflective Learning Journal of your workplace learning experiences. If you are not working, you may use your present role as a student and keep records of your learning experiences during the course. There is a suggested reflective journal template attached for your use and a minimum of five of days records is required.

You will need to:

As an introduction to your Reflective Learning Journal; evaluate different approaches to self-managed learning. Propose two different ways in which lifelong learning in a personal and professional context could be encouraged, and evaluate the benefits of self-managed learning to yourself and organisation you work for currently or the one you wish to work for in the future.

When keeping a Reflective Learning Journal, record your experiences during work over a five a day period, evaluate own current skills and competencies against professional standards and organisational objectives, identify own development needs and the activities required to meet them and identify development opportunities to meet current and future defined needs.

(This provides evidence for outcome 1 – assessment criteria 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and for outcome 2 – assessment criteria 2.1, 2.2, 2.3)

Task 2. A Personal Development Plan

Using your ‘Reflective Learning Journal’ to demonstrate how working as a professional demands a continuous process of reflection, carry out a critical self-assessment and produce a Personal Development Plan. A suggested template for your Personal Development Plan is attached to this assignment brief.

You will need to:

? Devise a personal and professional development plan based on needs identified in Task 1.

? Discuss the processes and activities required to implement your Personal Development Plan.

? Undertake and document development activities as planned. Using your development plan, complete the activities that you set out as your needs for development. Research ways in which you can develop yourself as a person and in your chosen profession.

? Using your Reflective Learning Journal and PDP, carry out a critical reflection of your own learning against original aims and objectives set in the development plan. Write a short critical reflection on your progress in terms of your aims and objectives you set in your developmental plan. You can also use the feedback from your colleagues and tutors.

? Update the development plan based on feedback and evaluation. Since you have reflected on everything you have done you need to update your developmental plan. Remember it’s an ongoing process, you need to keep on updating it as you go along.

(This provides evidence for outcome 2 – assessment criteria 2.4, outcome 3 – assessment criteria 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4)
