SCENARIO

TB Manufacturing Limited is a well-established company specialising in the manufacture and supply of a wide range of machinery and accessories, both throughout the United Kingdom and internationally. Their Chief Executive has become increasingly concerned with several aspects of the employer/employee relationship within the organisation.

He has therefore contacted you as a Management Consultant for ideas has to how this situation can be remedied.  He feels that you as an outsider to the firm can present your ideas on a wide range of problems, including the processes and procedures involved in people management, the working relationships which should exist within a business organisation, the methods of managing and developing human resources and the question of industrial relations and legislation within an employment relationship.  If possible he would like to see examples of how similar companies operate in these respects.

Your task is to select a UK company similar to TB Manufacturing Limited and write a report on the following topics:

Section 1

b. Analyse how the general employment environment affects effective workforce recruitment and selection.

c. Outline the processes and procedures carried out when recruiting and selecting personnel for a given engineering post.

Section 2

LO2. Explain the working relationships within an engineering context

a. Explain different working relationships within an engineering organisation.

b. Examine lines of authority within an engineering organisation.

c. Discuss roles and responsibilities of employment within an engineering organisation. 

d. Review the relevant objectives of working relationships within an engineering context, including achieving targets, supporting team members and monitoring performance.

e. Explain how sub-contractors can be managed.

Section 3

LO3. Explain the methods of managing and developing human resources

a. Explain the importance of employee motivation and involvement, including theories and methods of motivating individuals and teams.

b. Evaluate a range of training techniques which are employed within an engineering organisation.

c. Explain the role of reward systems, appraisal and development schemes within an engineering organisation, providing some examples of such schemes.

d. Explain the benefits of training and development to the organisation and the individual.

LO4. Explain industrial relations and legislation within an employment relationship

a. Describe contractual regulations of employment.

b. Justify the use of employment practices in an engineering organisation.

c. Explain the constraints imposed by legislation on termination of employment.

d. Examine and report on the main features of current employment legislation.
