Research Participation Requirement Information

Management courses depend on scholarly research to build, refine, and empirically test theories of management. Arizona State University pursues research that contributes to the public good, which includes gaining an understanding of how managers can better plan, organize, lead and control organizations. The Management Department encourages each student enrolled in MGT 300 to gain familiarity with and an appreciation of the purpose, methods, problems, and results of research. To support students in acquiring this research knowledge, MGT 300 requires students to gain exposure to the scholarly research process. THIS RESEARCH REQUIREMENT IS INDEPENDENT OF ANY RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS FOR OTHER CLASSES.

You have two options for completing the research requirement for MGT 300. You must fulfill one of the options below to receive credit for completing the research requirement.

To protect your rights and confidentiality as research participants, the research requirement is administered by a team of researchers in the Management Department. Dr. Neck does not have any information about the requirement, and therefore please direct all questions, comments, and issues concerning your research participation to the Management Department Behavioral Lab.

1. Research participation. For this option, you will complete 2 credits worth of research studies (approximately 2 hours total). This may include participating in a research study conducted in the Management Behavioral Lab located in the BA building (BA 321 & BA 322), an online research study, or a combination of lab and online studies. More details on available studies and the sign up process will be discussed in class and shared on Blackboard. The online registration system will display the credits you will receive for completing each study.

a. To receive credit, you must attend and actively participate in the research studies you sign up for. If you participate in good faith, then you will receive credit for your participation, but if you do not participate in an appropriate or conscientious manner you will not receive credit. For example, those who choose to participate in an online study but who quickly rush through the study without following the directions or providing conscientious responses may not receive credit. Those who sign up for a lab session and are unable to attend should cancel their registration in the online system as soon as possible to avoid penalty.

b. To receive credit, you must complete 2 credits worth of research studies. Partial credit will not be given if you complete less than 2 credits worth of studies.

2. Research paper. This option is an alternative to participating in a research study. To receive credit, you must read and review three research articles related to topics covered in MGT 300 per the instructions below. Articles are typically 20-30 single-spaced pages in length. Partial credit will not be given if you complete only one or two articles.
