NAVIGATING COLLEGE. Good mentoring and advising. At key points of their college years, an academic advisor asked questions, or posed a challenge, that forced them to think about the relationship of their academic work to their personal lives. I particularly liked this quote because at several points of my school life in Taiwan, I felt the importance of good guidance from "advisors" or "mentors". Especially, I believe my thesis advisor was very influential in helping me develop a more scientific way of thinking, and my academic advisor helped me a lot to find opportunities to gain practical experience in my field. These are two elements that I think are very important for my personal and professional goals for the future.

Nevertheless, I think most of the times as students we don't make the best use of the academic advisors that are assigned to us by the department in National Cheng Kung University, just as the book illustrates. More often than not, we just go to ask for their signature for some paperwork every now and then. In my own case, what I didn't realize until later in my college years is that actually we can reach out to our professors and ask them questions about our career plans, how to improve our study methods when dealing with difficult courses, and even what universities to choose for master's degree or some good companies to work for after graduation. They are people who have had the same experiences as we have at some point of their lives, but have gone through a lot more ever since that, so they can give us some good insights to the questions we pose to them.
