Question: Interoperability is concerned with linking software with different platforms and languages to exchange and share data conveniently and securely. The implementation of utilizing several different systems is difficult because of multiple platforms and languages associated with these systems (Tan & Payton, 2010). The purpose of having interoperability is for software to interact and exchange data, and to present such information in a way that can be utilized by the individual, whether it is a physician or a patient. The encoded information needs to have the same coding language and in similar platforms to interact properly. Once this is achieved throughout the healthcare industry at individual institutions, the idea of universal, national coverage can be more easily accomplished. Sharing of information can be smooth and can be accessed anywhere, by anyone, with the same procedures using a common interface. This uniformity can allow a transition from isolated departments to connected healthcare systems.

Interoperability is needed in healthcare to enable better workflow and to allow data transfer among other systems within the healthcare system. When information is seamlessly shared within a healthcare institution, the delivery of care is more efficient and effective, limiting incorrect care, recommending proper treatments, disclosure of past medical histories and the reduction of ambiguity and wasted procedures (healthit.gov, 2013). Interoperability allows for more focused home care, putting some of the responsibility into the hands of the patient. When analyzing statistically, interoperability can help an organization reduce cost, reduce waiting times and increase patient satisfaction with systems that can work together. It is the direction that healthcare is moving, especially with longer life spans and increasing number of people are aging into their 60s.
