Question: Gaul worked for AT&T as Senior Technical Associate. He was diagnosed as suffering from depression and anxiety-related disorders, but was able to control his condition for more than a year with antidepressant drugs. He then suffered a nervous breakdown and was hospitalized for several weeks. He was absent from work for approximately three months. After receiving treatment, his condition appeared under control, but he later suffered a relapse after an unfavorable performance review from his manager and again went out on disability leave. Gaul asked that AT&T assign him to a "low stress" position, but AT&T ignored his request and Gaul was placed on disability retirement.
