Project: Seeking Funding For Your CBPR Project

Grant writing for a CBPR project requires more than a well-written proposal that is logically organized, with clear measurable objectives, coherent and appropriate methods, a reasonable timeline, and alignment with the funder's goals. It also needs to persuade your potential funder that CBPR is going to work with this community!

Recent initiatives within federal funding agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), support increasing funding for participatory research projects. However, despite these efforts, federal agencies struggle with the inclusion of collaborators who have no scientific training in these types of research ventures.

For this Assignment, you will examine some of the challenges involved in convincing potential funders to fund your Final Project.

To prepare: Review Appendix B from your Minkler and Wallerstein textbook.

- Review Minkler, Blackwell, and Tamir (2003), found in this week's Learning Resources.

By Day 7

- Submit a 3- to 4-page paper that includes the following:

- An explanation of why your non-scientifically trained community collaborators are essential to the success and sustainability of your CBPR project

- A description of how you would engage your community partners in the grant-writing process (Hint: Review the Hoeft article.)

- An explanation of which elements in your proposed CBPR project would not be feasible or doable without the involvement of these stakeholders

- An explanation of why your proposed project is feasible and fundable

- An explanation of how you would convince the funding source why your proposed CBPR project-and its corresponding community-based partners-makes for sound, scientific research.
