Overfishing has brought many fish and other marine species to the brink of extinction, threatening future food supplies and the ways of life of many communities. Describe and discuss the global problem of overfishing and propose potential solutions to it, including by reference to the perceived solutions to environmental problems as they relate to business activities discussed in this unit.
REQUIREMENT:
Students are required to prepare a formal academic paper in essay format with an expected length of 2500 words which addresses one of the research topics provided through Blackboard in Week 2. The research topics require you to identify and research concepts and problems raised in your lectures and readings and then to apply them critically to the particular assignment topic that you select from a list of ten (10) topics provided. Students may find that the High Flyer: Student notes for success, no. 13 on Critical analysis: asking problems (http://www.business.curtin.edu.au/files/13_2011_post_ID QA.pdf) is also useful in learning how to engage in critical analysis. The Major assignment has to include both a descriptive and an analytical component. In other words, you need to provide a critical analysis rather than just a summary of the relevant literature. Research papers need to be fully referenced and written to academic standards. The assessment criteria (rubric) for the major assignment can be viewed on Blackboard (http://lms.curtin.edu. au).
Your essay needs to demonstrate evidence of having read and absorbed AT LEAST eight (8) scholarly academic journal articles (you can include other authenticated reference sources e.g., Australian Bureau of Statistics, as needed, but these do not count towards the minimum required scholarly articles) and
should not rely on web-based material taken from sites such as Wikipedia, Tutor.net, etc.
