One of the most important things to understand regarding handling this situation is the short amount of time that you been with this organization, which also means that you have had an even shorter amount of time to get to know your subordinate employees. As a former military officer, it would be very important for me to establish myself as the supervisor of these employees. I would agree that I use positional power, but I would not admit too much of it. I would also use this opportunity to inform them of my background as a military officer and the ranks I have held are solely roles of positional power; you tell subordinates what to do and they do it and that is the way the military works. Following this explanation, I would tell them that the reason I have not been receptive to their ideas is because I am still getting to know them, along with their work and ideas. Further down the road after developing work relationships with these employees, brainstorming and idea sharing would definitely be a possibility.

The difference between positional power and personal power is a stark contrast. Positional power is when an individual makes others do things or complete tasks that they do not want to do, but they have to. Personal power is when an individual can inspire others and this makes them want to do those things.

In my own life as a noncommissioned officer in the Army and a military policeman, I would use positional power repeatedly in order to gain the compliance of those that I sought to,  whether it was subjects, victims, or witnesses. I used personal power on the soldiers in my squad to make them take pride in being ready for missions, weapons cleaned and trucks ready and it worked great.

Personal Power is influencing people to do things because they want to and position power means influencing people to do things because they have to (Conlow 2001). Now to better explain these two words in my own words personal power is the ability to show people what the benefits would be for completing every day task at the work place. People can either be influenced by their weekly check, the opportunity to move up in the company or their love and respect for the cause.Position power is basically when the boss let you know that these everyday task will be done and done the way he prefers it or there wont be no job. The ladder is a little less desirable position. I rather the first.

To address the situation I would give my employees to present their own ideas and I will also put in place a program that rewards good work. When things are done wrong I would try not to give it too much light but instead save that light for when things are done right. Also I will always make sure to talk to the employees in a respectable manner no matter what the situation is.

The only time I could remember personal power being used is in school. We were told that if e did good on our test we could get a pizza party. This made us want to study hard and do good on the test so we could have a fun after noon and pizza party. On the other hand I see position power used a little too much. I work at a temp agency and for some reason the people I usually work for seam like they have to be tough from the beginning and let me know who is in charge.
