Final Reflection-

Preparing for Final Assignment:

Throughout the course, numerous topics on healthcare management have been discussed. Reflecting on the different discussions, readings, assignments, and your previous courses, consider the overall role of the healthcare manager operating in the current healthcare environment. The final assignment for this course involves a bow-tie methodology which can seem complex, if one has never attempted to apply this approach previously.

However, this methodology is simply a tool for systematically addressing patient safety. Depending on the different type of healthcare setting that one is operating, can determine the different type of methods and approaches used for addressing such issues. Many organizations use a tool referenced as the 5 Times: Why Technique or the 5 Whys Process. This type of tool allows the healthcare organization to focus on the "whys" of the situation.

The 5 whys approach considers the following aspects: define, measure, analyze, improve, and control. This approach has demonstrated to be very beneficial in a healthcare setting. Another type of approach is fishbone analysis, which also considers the cause and effect of a situation. Many of these approaches can be used in combination for addressing such complex healthcare considerations.

Discussion Post: In a minimum of 150 words, discuss the following of the question:

1. How can the bow-tie approach assist in addressing complex healthcare incidents? Do you prefer the bow-tie approach over another approach? Why?

Helpful Hints: One approach is not better than another. Every organization establishes their own set of parameters for conducing RCAs and may use a multitude, or culmination, of tools. This question is a critical thinking question, and depending on your professional healthcare goals, may be something that you may utilize in the future.
