Discussion - Convergence

Convergence is the term often used to describe technical devices that evolve and adopt the functionality of other devices. For instance, television adopted recording functions, once owned by the VCR, with the advent of digital video recorders such as TIVO. Computers are now adopting the functionality of television with streaming video broadcasts. Cellular phones with Internet and video capabilities are an example of a convergent device.

As technology continues to converge how will our emotional connection and perceptions of media change? Will this be good thing? How will convergence change business' approach to media? Explain.

I think most people already have a huge emotional connection with their technology. Just take a look at cell phones. People use them to keep in touch with family, friends and sometimes complete strangers. They can text, twitter, face book, watch videos, take pictures, and so much more. They are a part of a person if you will. Some people would be lost without them.

As with anything I think it can be good and bad. I am a bit older and not from the always had a computer or cell phone generation so I did not take to all of the technology as quickly as some. I do think that it is so much easier to use now than even just a few years ago. So that in itself is a good thing. On the other side though, I think the lines of personal and public get abused or fuzzy at times.  

I think convergence changes a business' point of view because it is so easy to connect to people personally now through technology. It allows business' to target people and give them an experience that is designed just for their interests and likes which connects them emotionally to the product.
