Assignment: Choose and research a compelling issue relevant to life on Planet Earth circa 2016. Then, take aninformed position within the larger debate you have investigated, and write a 3 page paper that (1) informs thereader of the general stakes of the debate and (2) systematically and convincingly persuades the reader to acceptyour position as a contingent truth.

You may argue for or against anything you wish, but your topic must be both sophisticated and debatable. Here aresome examples of successful and unsuccessful arguments:

- Unsophisticated: Medical marijuana should be legalized in California because people with certainillnesses benefit from its effects.
- Undebatable: GLBT rights are an important social issue in California, and a series of recentlegislative debates strongly indicate this.
- Sophisticated/Debatable: In October 2011, California Governor Jerry Brown signed the ‘Dream Act'
into law, which will provide scholarships and other benefits for undocumentedimmigrants attending California's universities. Many young people will benefitnin the short term from the passage of the bill, but because it will place additional strain on fierce legislative debates currently raging regarding thefuture of the state's universities and community college system it is ultimatelyshortsighted.
In your essay, you must also make constructive use of the following:

- At least two credible outside sources, which may include scholarly books or articles, historical documents, legal documents, or other materials. Part of the challenge of this assignment will be to determine whatconstitutes a "credible" source in your particular debate. Encyclopedia articles may not be used. Dictionaries do not count. Internet sources must be verifiably credible to count.
