What new political, social, and cultural trends accompanied the rise of patriotic and nationalist identities in the 19th and early 20th century Middle East? Where did new ideas about nationality, citizenship, and patriotism come from? Who espoused these ideas, and in what settings? How did they compete (or conflict) with longstanding Ottoman traditions, and how did the Ottoman state grapple with these ideas?

Addressing as many facets of this question as possible, be sure to include examples from your readings and our discussions to back up your arguments, using footnote citations like so.

External readings are not required for this assignment, but should you decide to use them, you will need to append a Bibliography to the paper listing external sources. No bibliography is needed if you stick to readings assigned for this class.

- Makes relevant comparisons/contrasts
- Draws in relevant source material (both secondary and primary)
- Proper formatting and length (see below)

The final paper should be 12 point, Times New Roman font, double-spaced with 1-inch margins. The paper should be 5-7 pages and contain a coherent thesis statement that introduces your primary arguments. You must bring a hard copy to class on February 19 in addition to uploading it into the TurnItIn system (accessible through Bb). Late papers will not be accepted.
