Canada, My Canada

In the essay short story dubbed Canada, My Canada, Tomson Highway recounts his reactions to a newspaper headline he saw during his voyage across Australia. The newspaper headline which aelluded to the fact that Canada had been rated as the number one country for living in the world evoked emotional memories and feelings in the author about this country. Seemingly overwhelmed with the revelation, the author praises Canada for everything from its beautiful landscapes to the good amenities,; from its good education system to good work opportunity and conditions; and from for the variety of food to the peaceful coexistence of a multiple ethnic people. In particular, he speaks highly of the fact that Canada has the highest percentage of multiethnic representation in the whole world, yet they all coexist in harmony. In the long end, he poses the question, "Is Canada a successful experiment in racial harmony and peaceful coexistence?" to which he answers in the affirmative and even proceeds to proclaim that he is proud of that conviction. By the end of reading this article, the reader is compelled to ask him/herself whether Canada is really all of this these. This paper addresses this concern by giving my own experience about Canada .

It is indeed a fact that Canada has been referred to as ‘The Cultural Mosaic' given that its population is composed of a mix of cultures, races and ethnicities from across the universe. Being one of the wealthy nations in the world and with arguably better and accommodative policies about immigration, Canada has continued to experience an upsurge of immigrants which move to the North American country in search of better living standards. As the borders of Canada remain open, more and more people from across the world continue to move into the country in search for a better life. Consequently, the populations naturally grow not only in terms of the numbers but in terms of the cultural diversity as well.

Canada prides itself as the one country which respects and celebrates the cultures of several other countries around the world. So, how has the country managed to achieve all this? Firstly, to understand this one has to look at the governance of this country, Canada. To date, Canada remains a federal state which is entirely under a constitutional monarchy, having the Queen of England as the monarch. Besides that, there is a centralized federal government headed by a prime minister who is also the head of the political party with the majority support in the House of Commons. He/she controls much political power which they exercise in appointments to other non-elective government positions as well as in the civil service. The federal parliament is bicameral consisting of an appointed senate and an elected house of commons. The central federal government is duly supported by semi-autonomous provincial leadership that is also territorially democratic. The legal framework through which Canada is governed is composed of a written constitution as well as unwritten conventions and traditions .

In terms of resources, Canada is a vast land that is endowed with several resources including being the country with the largest amount of fresh water collectively. This has worked to the advantage of Canada in terms of its ability to develop the agricultural sector. As a matter of fact, Canada is today one of the key producers and exporters of wheat today, wheat products, and other grains as well. In addition, Canada is also endowed with large oil and gas deposits as well as other minerals like gold, nickel, uranium, and zinc. As a consequence, the agricultural and mining sectors have easily contributed to the growth of many manufacturing industries, thus turning Canada into a job hub. For this and many more reasons, Canada has continued to attract many skilled immigrants to its shores and borders.

In most cases, wars result from the struggle to control resources, especially where the resources are limited. In the Canadian situation, with an immigration rate of over 20% and an unemployment rate of below 10%, it follows then that without the immigrants, the country would be understaffed. With one of the highest income per capita rates around the world, it is quite obvious that the inhabitants of the country are all able to get all their basic needs and therefore have enough time to concentrate on other things like getting to understand one another.

There are several non-governmental organizations that are all dedicated to ensuring that there is the highest achievable quality of life for everyone which is advantageous for all cultures. Canada has one of the best and most active set of human rights activists who work round the clock to ensure that human rights are upheld and accorded to everyone regardless of their ethnic backgrounds, race or cultural orientations. Majority of the immigrants have the opportunity to get due assistance from these activists, and therefore, armed with the necessary information they reduce their chances of vulnerability.

The judicial system in Canada is also responsible to a great degree for to the racial harmony witnessed in Canada. Well aware of the efficiency of the justice system and by extension the stringent punishment that anyone who violates the rights of the other is liable to receive, even the would-be offenders are easily deterred from doing things that would harm others.

The education system also promotes peaceful coexistence in Canada as well. It is often said that knowledge is power. When one is knowledgeable about their fundamental rights, it is never easy for someone else to take advantage of them and deny them that right. Furthermore, people only demonize what they do not understand. The government has invested a lot towards the study of the various ethnic groups. This has improved the knowledge of the masses about their similarities and differences as well, something that seems to work so well for the friendship building through better understanding of each other.

That said, it is time to revisit the question by Tomson Highway about whether or not Canada has been a successful experiment of racial harmony and peaceful coexistence. To this, I join Highway by saying yes. Nevertheless, it is not something that has occurred naturally but an achievement that has been nurtured over the years and for which credit is due to all the Canadians. Achieving this has come at a cost and at the top of it are as the good policies that have contributed largely to better understanding among the people of the various cultural backgrounds . Whereas it would be foolish to claim that Canada has fully overcome the war of racism and ethnicity, it is appropriate to acknowledge the fact that compared to other countries, it has managed to get the highest number of ethnic communities in the world to live in the most relative peace and mutual understanding.
