The loss of Biodiversity is a major issue and we have come up with a solution that we feel is realistic and if implemented would have a profound impact on the loss of biodiversity. Biodiversity is the variation of life on the planet. This variation allows for animals to thrive and survive in different ecological niches. Different forms of life like animals, plants and insects make up the ecology of the planet. All these life forms are interdependent and the loss of a species can result in a domino affect leading to the extinction of other species (Pearlman, Adelson, 1997). Many factors affect the rate of biodiversity loss such as pollution, deforestation, Farming practices and human activity. Humans seem to be the largest factor in the loss of biodiversity on the planet. Humans are the one who cause all the pollution; we also tear down forests and clear land for farming. The solution we have decided on is that we need to place pressure on the put in place legislation to protect what we have and rebuild what we have. We also want to teach the younger generations to respect the environment by making ecology and biodiversity part of the school curriculum. Biodiversity can be protected by new laws and enforcement of those laws and nurtured by future generations if we give them the knowledge and the tools to do so.
Humans have been on planet a short time in respect to the age of the earth. In this short time we have become masters of our environment and in doing so we have become the dominant species on the planet. The real impact of humanity on biodiversity started in the early 1900's with the Industrial revolution (Johnson. D,B., 1998) The industrial revolution changed the way humans lived and interacted with the world around them. People congregated in cities, and had a higher demand for goods. This demand was meet by more production, which in turn caused more pollution. At this time we humans had no idea what we were doing to the environment, that being said not much is different now that we do know. There have been many attempts at solving the issue of Biodiversity loss. One solution was to prioritize those species that are most at risk of extinction. This program puts all its efforts into conservation of species that are at a high risk of extinction and places them under protection and initiates a breeding program to help revive the species to levels that are higher (Venter, et al. 2006). Another way that humans have tried to combat biodiversity loss is set up sanctuaries in the natural habitats of species at risk. These sanctuaries are dedicated and protected habitats that are native to the species at risk. By protecting their natural habitats it is hoped that they will be able to rebound in numbers. 
Canada has many government programs in place to help protect biodiversity. Canada has in effect today the Endangered species act, which provides for the conservation of endangered or threatened species throughout all or most of their range and the eco systems they depend on (Esa, 2011). Also the Canadian environmental protection act, which is made up of a combination of, acts pertaining to environment standards, protection and penalties for violation of this act (red path). Canada also has a prioritizing act; the Species at Risk act make the government obligated to work to rebuild threatened or endangered species populations and take action to prevent relatively common species from facing further risk (Venter, et al., 2006). The issue with this specific act is that it leaves many plant and wild life species at risk since you cannot help them all. (Eco justice, 2009). Many of the issues with Canada's action plans concerning biodiversity stem from a lack of public support and awareness as well as a lack of funding (nature, 2006). J
The solution we purpose is to enhance the legislation to protect biodiversity and to educate the future generations so that may can do a better job than the generations before. We plan to do this by passing laws that would increase the punishment for individuals and corporations that violate the laws that help protect biodiversity. Also we would petition the government to pass new legislation that would reintroduce biodiversity education into the school system. Education is a key point in our solution since younger generations are the ones who will be dealing with the ramifications of the current situation of biodiversity. In our attempt to have legislation passed to further protect biodiversity in Canada and have stricter punishment for those who break these laws we will need the Canadian people to be better informed of the issue itself. The major issues with most of the action plans that have been put in place already have floundered because of a lack of organization and the apathy of the Canadian public (Venter et al.,) We plan to combat this apathy by using the social technology of the day; Facebook, Twitter and the like. With the whole world being connected in one way or another by social media getting information out to the public has become infinitely easier. We would also attempt to have a mass media campaign to help raise the awareness of biodiversity loss so that people were more informed on the issue. 
The other aspect of our plan is education. In Canada students are not required to take and ecology or biodiversity class at any level of school (Ontario ministry of education, 2011). Students have an option to take a biodiversity class in grade 6 but the earliest level suggested for learning environmental science is grade 3 (Ontario ministry of Education, 2011). Knapp and Avanzo (2010) suggest three ways of enhancing the education of ecology in the school system. First they suggest identifying a set of ecological principles. This would help ensure a clear standard in all schools. To take this concept further teachers should help their students focus on the "big picture" and should also try to clarify the concept of Biodiversity so that children can understand the concepts at very level that it is being taught. Secondly Knapp and Avanzo (2010) suggest that the curriculum be interactive and engaging. Some ways that this could be accomplished is to encourage active discussions, make these sometimes complex situations easily understood by using everyday exs and situations and lastly by using tactile experiments and demonstrations. The future generations are the best chance of making a difference in the future, if we give them the tools and understanding they can do a better job than previous generations.
The timeline we envision for this program to truly take effect is 25 years.
In this 25-year span we hope to see and average of a 1 percent increase in endangered species populations. This time frame we feel is very realistic since in that time the children who started learning about ecology and biodiversity in grade school will be adults. Our hope is that in this time the legislation and enforcement will become stronger and protection and rebuilding will have built a stronger base for endangered species to build from. 
The major issue with our solution is funding. Funding is the main reason most of the other solutions put forth to stop biodiversity loss have had issues. If we are to put our solution into practice we have to have the financial backing to be able to put together our ad campaigns. The best way we feel to go about this is to start a not-for-profit organization. Not-for-profit organizations can accept donations from individuals or companies and can also accept sponsorships from these two groups as well (Bartle.P. 2012). Also as a Not-for-profit organization we would be able to receive government grants and tax reductions (Bray, I., 2012). We have also considered using a lottery system in an attempt to raise money. The government currently uses funds from the lottery to fund general programs such as education, welfare and public health programs (Chivian.E. Bernstein. A., 2008). If we were able to start our own lottery like the Heart and Stroke has we may be able to generate funds that way. Donations from both public and private sources will allow us to fund our campaign to make legislation change and enhance the ecological education of future generations. 
Other issues our solution would face are apathy from the general public and a misunderstanding of the issue itself. Many people just do not care about the loss of biodiversity because they feel it has no effect on them. We hope that we can raise awareness of the impact that the loss of biodiversity has on everyone's life. Social media will play a very large roll in this. Facebook, Twitter and the like will allow us to raise awareness with little to no cost to others or ourselves. What will cost money is the change to the school system. If the curriculum is to change we will need to invest in new textbooks, teacher development and also in specimens and interactive activities to help the children learn and understand the concept. This will cost the population in taxes but since taxes are already collected for education it should not be an extra expense. Over all the majority of the cost of this solution should be able to be covered by donations and tax dollars.
The biological ramifications of the solution could be overwhelming if the solution works the way we intend it to. With the younger generation being exposed to ecology and conservation of biodiversity at a young age they should grow up to have a healthy respect for nature and hopefully will do a better job with the planet than generations before have done. If the plan doesn't work the ramifications will be no worse than what is happening right now. In effect if will have no impact at all if it fails.
