The discussion that started in class on October 14, 2012 was in response to the issue of abortion, since both Vice President Joe Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan being Catholics were asked what their position on abortion was and how their views on abortion as Catholics would affect how their administration would deal with the issue of abortion. Biden’s answer was what I found to be quite diplomatic since he one hand stated that he accepted his church’s position on abortion, yet at the same time claimed that just because he has certain views on abortion doesn’t mean he has the right to enforce his beliefs on others who don’t adhere to his faith. Ryan’s response to the question of abortion started out with him saying that he doesn’t see how he can separate his private life from his public life. I personally thought that such a view of ridiculous, since I do believe that one is capable of doing so. For example, if let’s say we have a Jewish president one day or a Muslim president, he or she can hold the position and personal belief that pork or any pig meat shouldn’t be consumed, doesn’t mean he or she would feel the need to enforce his or her belief on the whole nation. After watching the segment on abortion of the vice presidential debate, we the class engaged in interesting conversation on what we thought about Biden and Ryan’s response to the question regarding abortion. The issue regarding abortion and the responses to the question of abortion presented by the two vice presidential candidates had diverse reaction them from members of the class.

One reaction presented by Professor Stenmark involved her view of Biden’s response towards the question of abortion to be hypocritical, since according to what she was saying about Biden’s response was that he was saying one thing on one hand and on the other hand he was saying another thing. I’m not sure if I would have used the word hypocritical since saying two different things would definitely be inconsistency rather than hypocrisy, at least to me. However, my personal reaction to the debate didn’t see a problem in what Biden was saying. Just because a person may hold a belief about something doesn’t mean he can’t allow others to feel differently about that very subject. This could exactly be what Vice Presidential Joe Biden was trying to say in his response to the abortion question in the debate. If anything Paul Ryan’s inconsistency should have been addressed in class since he as Joe Biden pointed out during the debate said at one point that abortion should not be allowed even in situations like rape, yet in the debate was saying something else. However, as I observed there were also those, unlike me, who agreed with the professor’s view towards Joe Biden’s take on the abortion issue.

During the class discussion, we also touched about the issue of abortion itself, specifically the issue of when life actually begins. I was at least one of those that believed that life did begin at conception in the class, though by the time class ended I really ended up questioning that aspect of my belief. It was also surprising for to find out that the professor despite being an ordained minister didn’t believe that life began at conception. There were also those in class that did not believe that life began at conception. Seeing this gave me some concern on whether or not I should voice my view on abortion, since I am pro-life, though I do believe abortion should be allowed in some circumstances, as in the case of rape or incest. I do have to say that I loved the fact that there were students in the class who held opposing views to abortion and were more closely leaning towards mine. Though it was nice to see diverse views on abortion, there was one thing that did personally frustrate me, which was the justification for abortion provided by one student. According to her, the decision of abortion should entirely be in the woman’s hand just because she carries the baby for nine months. Though as a man I can never comprehend this, but from what I have read most women do enjoy the nine months of pregnancy period. Furthermore, just because you have to carry a child for nine months doesn’t morally justify taking that child’s life, assuming you believe its a living being. And since the child is also the father’s that also doesn’t give the mother the right to abort the baby at will without discussing the father. From what I have learned about what we as a society go through is that when the woman wants the baby she can have the baby irrespective whether the father of the child is capable of raising a child or not or whether he wants to be a dad or not. I really despise the notion that only the mother has a monopoly on whether or not a child should be born when it takes two to tango.

Observing the discussion in class on both abortion and the vice presidential debate discussion on abortion there indeed diverse views in the class on both subject. Apparently, for me some of the things that were brought up in the discussion made me upset, which I gave examples of, but I think thats part of living you get offended, but nevertheless get to hear what the other side has to say.
