SOFTWARE SYSTEM DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE

Patient Monitoring System

A computer system monitors the vital signs of a patient in a hospital. Sensors attached to a patient continually send information to the computer:

heart rate

temperature

blood pressure

Some of the readings require conversion to useful units of measurement (e.g. micro volts into degrees centigrade).

The computer displays the information on a screen. It also logs the information in a file that can be retrieved and displayed. If any of the vital signs exceed safe limits, the screen flashes a warning and an alarm sounds.

The limits have default values, but can also be changed by the operator. If a sensor fails, the screen flashes a warning and the alarm sounds.

How will requirement documents be used and maintained, especially as requirements evolve?

What processes, methods, and techniques are available for maintenance, and how effective are they?

For SLP4, students will choose one of the following options to deliver SLP questions.

A written MS Word paper consisting of 2-3 pages in length, excluding cover page and references.

A 10-slide PowerPoint Presentation or Prezi with detailed presenter notes, references, and including graphics.

A 3-minute podcast using the software of choice, or other such as Sound Recorder or Audacity to create an audio file and saved as a MP3 or WAV.

A 3-minute video delivered as an MP4 or MOV file.

An infographic or visual diagram delivered as a PDF or JPEG. The student may use any Microsoft product or free sites such as Piktochart, Easel.ly, LucidChart, or Canva to create the infographic.

SLP Assignment Expectations

You will be particularly assessed on:

Precision: You see what the module is all about and structure your paper accordingly. You draw on a range of sources and establish your understanding of the historical context of the question. You carry out the exercise as assigned or carefully explain the limitations that prevented your completing some parts. (Running out of time is not generally considered an adequate limitation.)

Support for assertions: You use examples, citations (especially from the required readings), and elaboration to support assertions. You provide evidence that you have read the required background materials.

Clarity: Your answers are clear and show your good understanding of the topic. You see what the module is all about and structure your paper accordingly.

Critical thinking: The paper incorporates your reactions, examples, and applications of the material to business and illustrates your reflective judgment and good understanding of the concepts. It is important to read the "Required Reading" in the Background material plus other sources you find relevant.

Breadth and depth: You provide informed commentary and analysis-simply repeating what your sources say does not constitute an adequate paper. The scope covered in your paper is directly related to the questions of the assignment and the learning outcomes of the module.

Overall quality: You apply the professional language and terminology of systems design and analysis correctly and in context; you are familiar with this language and use it appropriately. Your paper is well written and the references, where needed, are properly cited and listed.
