SOCIAL & INFORMATION NETWORKS MAJOR ASSIGNMENT - PAIRS/GROUPS

Task

Your group will develop a comparison of data, (using data sets of the group's choosing - some are provided should you wish to use them); and develop a visualisation that displays the results, and then present it in topic; as well as writing individual reports on the process, aims, and results.

Your group will use generate results from network mining exercises and data analysis, and display the results in a comparison, then do a visualisation of these results. The visualisation can be anything from a simple display of a number data sets in infographic style, to a full graphical single visualisation. There are bonus points only for creativity for only the best of the visualisations.

It must be useful information that is compared - you will be graded on how well you use the provided data to compare, and what nodes and edges you choose, and what information features you extract - and the appropriateness of the visualisation(s), as discussed in lectures..

Some initial suggestions:

  • the same social network, but differentiate between location or time
  • the same aspect of usage or information from two different networks

There are example data sets that will be provided; however, you are free to extract data using the coding tools as you have been taught in the practicals, or from other data sets freely, (and legally!), available elsewhere. If in doubt, check with your tutor, or the lecturer.

You are expected to run this project in a professional manner, tracking communications & meetings, as well as effort by each member, as well as your own. This will be presented as part of the assignment, as part of the Individual Report.

You will be graded on the following (see sections below):

  • Demonstration & Group Presentation
  • Major Report

Deliverables

Demonstration - this is some form of visualisation in whatever format you wish- a web site, a presentation, whatever you feel best suits the data - showing the results of social mining of two social networks, either two different ones, or aspects of the same one, to present USEFUL comparison data. A visualisation (or multiple) of the results, clearly showing the outcomes. The code MUST be commented, with code from the textbook clearly differentiated from original code. Each participant is to contribute some code.If less code than others, more work on the Web Site or other form of Visualisation must be substituted, and effort must be equal in total (see Individual Report). The demonstration will be shown in the presentation (see below), and the code uploaded to FLO. Grades are awarded on design, creativity, and suitability of the visualisation for the data chosen. The difficulty of the data sets is also a factor.

Group Presentation - presentation of 6-7 minutes only, (8-9 for triads), at the end of which time you will be cut off, and penalised as not concluded within time. The presentations should have an introduction & conclusion, with each member presenting, and containing discussion of the development, research, & results of the project. The Demonstration must be shown during this presentation.

The presentation must be uploaded as a Powerpoint type file on the due date listed above. Failure to do so will mean failure to have the use of the presentation material during your presentation. Should you wish to do a web based presentation, documentation for accessing it use be included separately in the uploaded ZIP as a PDF document.

The major report is delivered in two parts:

Group Report

A detailed technical and descriptive report into the project - the social networks, data mining, the choices made by the group, any relevant research, the process, the results, and showing the visualisation(s), and how they were achieved.

Individual Report

You must also provide project management. This entails setting up the necessary documentation to track work done by each member, meetings called, attendance, and all contacts. The individual reports are expected to reflect this documentation, and each student will hand up individually the finalised group report plus their own individual report as an appendix. See below for more details. Suggested communication and tracking of tasks tools (a spreadsheet will do, but students have reported these free tools to be helpful, as they tie in together):

  • Communications: Slack
  • Task Tracking: Trello
