Host Base Security System

Host Base Security System (HBSS) is a scalable commercial of the shelf (COTS) software suite based application created by McAfee (McAfee 2003). McAfee was awarded this Department of Defense (DoD) contract to create a DoD mandated tool to provide Intrusion Prevention services (IPS) that included signature and behavioral protection. HBSS also provides desktop firewall protection by providing a filter between host and the network. HBSS has the capability to scan packet levels and reports the status to a centralized managed firewall policy on the HBSS console. This makes the configuration and maintenance of the firewall policies on the network easier and less time consuming. There are six programs that create the program suite: Policy Auditor, Device Control Module, Rogue System Detection, Host Intrusion Prevention System, Asset Baseline Module, and Asset Publishing Service. The DoD has implemented and installed the application on over half of the DoD hardware across the government.
