Within this article some really valid points were raised about how service-oriented architecture is still a relatively new concept and really needs more academic research and has not been fully evaluated. They believe that to accelerate this a conceptual model is needed. As part of this article the authors "...developed a model of SOA adoption, which was built on the basis of DOI theory, TOE framework, and extensive review of IT diffusion and SOA literature." It was on this model that a survey research instrument was developed and used to gather data.

The results gained from the research gives some idea into the current state of service-oriented architecture South African company's. They concluded that their research was consistent with previous industry surveys on service-oriented architecture performed with developed countries and therefore believe to South African is in line with developed countries in-relation with service-oriented architecture. Examples of this include how "...South African respondents view SOA as a solution to inflexible and hard-to-integrate systems. Parallel to the State of SOA Survey 2010 organizational agility, improved business processes, re-use, reduced TCO, data integration and legacy application integration are among the most important benefits the South African respondents are expecting to achieve in their SOA implementations. The most pressing challenges of SOA adoption are issues related to SOA lifecycle: designing high quality services, testing and deploying services, ensuring run-time governance, designing SOA security, and issues related to SOA standards stability and maturity."
