Portfolio Essay and Purpose

This portfolio is aimed at understanding the difference in strategic management of two companies that have been evaluated against a particular set of strategic decisions that have been taken by them. In order to lend clarity to the assessment made, the portfolio assessment includes various tools on which both the companies have been contrasted.

To begin with an analysis of the vision, mission and organizational objectives has been drawn such that the activities that are being carried out are weighed against the original goals of the company. This is followed by the definition of the competitive advantages and relatively explains how each company strives to attain its competitive advantage along with factors that allow the company to sustain the advantaged and increase it.

Thirdly, an analysis of the value chain has been conducted in order to identify the core competencies of the two companies and the manner in which the business is made viable with respect to the external business environments and internal factors that determine the growth of the business.

An analysis of the strategies that can be applied has been conducted in order to evaluate the best strategy that can be applied using various strategic analysis tools.
Lastly, different options of strategic growth plans have been applied. With respect to the future strategies that are to be undertaken, the choice of acquisitions, mergers and partnerships can be identified.

This is a continuous process that is again evaluated after a strategic development cycle is completed and is then restarted with another objective that has to be attained.

The two companies that have been chosen are Apple Inc. and Samsung. Both the companies are in the same market domain and are relevant to the study owing to the nature of their business and strategic decisions that are being made.
