Part -1:

Each question should be answered in a short paragraph of anywhere between 100 to 200 words in length.

1. Briefly explain why Israel was able to win the 1948-1949 war against several hostile Arab states and establish its independence.

2. Summarize the situation of the Palestinian Arabs in the immediate aftermath of the 1948-1949 Arab-Israeli war.

3. Briefly explain how the modern state of Lebanon evolved out of territory occupied by the French after World War I. What balance of power evolved and how well did it work?

4. Define the termreligiopolitics, and briefly discuss how it relates to contemporary Islamic revivalism.

5. What are the three patterns of modern nation building in the Muslim world? Include in your answer examples of all three.

Essay Questions

Choose any two (2) of the Essay Questions to answer. (Note: While you only need to hand in two of the Essay Questions for your activity you should review all of them because any of them, even the ones you do not choose, may appear on your examination.)
Your answers to the Essay Questions should be between 500 words for each question.

1. Discuss Zionism. What were its origins, who were its main proponents, and what action did it inspire?

2. Discuss the development of the Arab-Israeli conflict over Palestine focusing on the period from the late nineteenth century until the creation of Israel in 1948.
