a. What are key design features of self-directed teams? Which design features are desirable and which are essential for success?

b. Why does Amasi decide to use this work system at the new Corpus Christi plant? How would you characterize Amasi? For example, is he attempting to drive change or lead change? Is he guilty of leadership hubris?

c. If you were in the position of a hiring manager and looking for employees who would excel in self-directed teams, what characteristics would you seek? Would the characteristics vary by industry or maturity of the company?

d. Compare and contrast the new plant to the old plant in terms of work design. Identify and rank order the most challenging problems.

e. In terms of both personnel management and plant policy, how would you address the identified areas of struggle between the workforce and plant management? Where would you set the boundary indecision making between the self-directed teams and management?

f. If you were plant manager, what would happen if an empowered worker asked, "Whycan't we have clear direction on productivity goals? All we hear is more, more, more. If we make significant improvements toward reaching the maximum productivity of the plant, how will that affect our compensation?"

g. If you were Amasi, how would you present the benefits of the self-directed team concept and the reasons for continuing the "Corpus Christi experiment"to the unionized workforce in the other two Wolfe plants?
