While the thesis statement is short, it is designed, and optimally should include the claim, the hypothesis, that will be studied in the research paper assignment.
One more tip, you may be familiar with another form of writing, that being the "White Paper" which is very customary in the IT industry.
The White Paper traditionally lacks a hypothesis (not always but most often), instead, it features a product or platform, whereas a research paper traditionally does not concentrate on a product or platform but rather on an overarching issue and of course is hinged on a hypothesis that can be proven or dis-proven.
