i. Select a small mapping project applicable to your 'mapping' system that aims to present a theme or specific solution (e.g. tourist map, farm map, habitat map, etc.).

ii. Be familiar with the operation, structure and capability of your system.

iii. Gather the data you need and prepare for a cartographic output (hardcopy map, electronic map, 'internet' map etc.).

iv. In preparing to produce an output, consider (as applicable) the following needs:

? Purpose of the project (for whom and what you aim to achieve or portray)

? legend/metadata information

? layers of information

? combined final output needs

? 'hot' links

? labelling

? layout

? size (or diskspace) of output

? 2D, 3D, animated etc.

? symbols (number, size, shape, colour, style etc.)

? map projection

? colour

? compatibility with output devices

? value added information or enhancements

? providing charts, graphs, profiles, etc. to supplement

? thematic schema

? query capabilities

? client needs.

v. When critically analysing your system's output consider the following:

? has it achieved its focus or purpose (what, how and to what level);

? what are the good/bad or limiting aspects of your actual result;

? colour ranges and changeability, colour choices, etc.;

? printing or display resolution; and

? accuracy and completeness.

Note: The simpler your mapping package the longer the critical analysis will probably be.

vi. Your hardcopy output should be either A4 or A3 paper size only. The electronic version should be in any of the following formats: pdf, gif, jpg, tif, htm, html, ppt, and doc.
