Exemplification:

Being a theatre major, I have met a fair share of people. There are the quiet, untalkative people who somehow pull out amazing performances on stage. Conversely, there is also the stereotypical theatre kid that is outgoing and loud to the point of being obnoxious. Within this spectrum, there lurks a type of person that everyone has heard about: the diva. They have been around for a while and therefore think that they know everything. What they don't know is that most of the things they do will only hurt them when they try to work in the professional world.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to a workshop of a dancer from Lindenwood who had just gotten back from the international tour of West Side Story. He started by saying that he didn't know why there were so few people at the workshop, since having going to a master class could only help you. During his story of the rehearsal process, he talked about the director, specifically how mean he was. The director would constantly berate him, telling him that he wasn't good enough and that he was stupid. He took every word of it, simply responding with "okay". He went on to explain that this was the proper way to react. You were not supposed to do anything other than what the director told you was right. Talking back or arguing would just get you fired. Throughout my experience in theatre, I have met individuals who do not do any of these things and are only hurting themselves in the long run.

The reason why many people did not go to the West Side Story workshop became evident after talking to one of my musical theatre friends. When I asked him why he didn't go, he responded with, "Well I was told by the upperclassmen that it was a waste of time and that the person running the workshop had quit the show". Not only was this untrue, but it also displayed the attitudes of most upperclassmen. They believed that, since they were upperclassmen, they didn't need to be bothered with a class taught by a fellow student. In other words, they thought they were too good for it. Having these beliefs could only hurt them in the long run, as they could be missing out on a wealth of information. Even if they only learned one thing in that workshop, it would be one more thing that they would now know. According to the speaker, this thought among many of the upperclassmen was a trend among the students whenever there was a master class.

When I was working crew for The Shape of Things, one performer in particular did everything we were told not to do. They were constantly giving the other actors their feedback. They would tell them to "Make the line their own" when the other actor was doing what the director told them to do. Their constant critiques would put the other performers on edge during rehearsals, more so than the director's notes. In addition, they made changes to one of their costumes, saying that they "couldn't move in it". Overall, they behaved in a way that would not have been tolerated in a professional environment. They would have been told to deal with whatever costume was given and to stop doing the director's job. Rebutting the director's notes would simply get them fired.

This situation additionally occurred throughout high school. Many times, the lead in the fall play my junior year would tell the other actors what they were doing wrong and what they needed to do better. For instance, during the one scene that we shared the lead stopped me, telling me that I had to be more concerned with the students that I was talking about. This was completely different from how to the director wanted it to be done, as that was not my character. In addition, the tips would often be as the director was talking, making it hard for the actors to hear their actual notes. This is completely unprofessional, as it is the director's job to tell the actors to change what they are doing.

Another thing that I found out about many of the upperclassmen is that many did not bother themselves with auditioning outside the regular season. For instance, I noticed when I auditioned for a children's show on campus that a good deal of the department was not auditioning. When I asked a junior where everyone else was, he responded with, "Oh they think they're too good for this". I found this strange, since most of the people auditioning were very talented actors who obviously didn't think that they were too good to be auditioning for the show. In addition, we are taught as actors to jump at any opportunity we had to audition so that we had more experience as well as a greater chance to be in productions. If these people take their thoughts into the professional world and are too selective of what they are auditioning for, they will have a hard time getting work.

I noticed the same phenomena in high school, where the "favorites" would not bother auditioning for show directed by alumni during the summer. What they didn't realize was how much they could profit from working with someone else and gaining their perspectives on performing. They do not think about the fact that they will eventually graduate and have to show other people what they can do as a performer. In the professional world, you must impress them simply with your talent, in which case different tips and perspectives might just be helpful.

Through performing in many shows in my life, I have realized that many individuals make choices that will hurt them in the long run. By passing up an audition or an opportunity to talk to a professional, they are missing out on opportunities to better themselves later on in life. Although what I have talked about occurs often in theatre, these ideas can be applied to other areas in life. Many people who are lazy and don't do anything to better themselves or their career are only hurting themselves as a person. It is important to keep trying to better your own life in order to make it the most fulfilling.
