Confidentiality is an important part of the counseling process. However, there are limits to confidentiality. One such limit to confidentiality is the psychologist's "duty to protect themselves and others from harm".

Read the following case study and answer the problems. Provide a well thought out response. Short responses will not receive full credit.

About 2 paragraphs for A, B, & C.

Dr. Harry Brush was counseling a male client that was having difficulty with his job and marriage. The client reported that as a result of having difficulties in his marriage, he had several affairs that included sex with random women and prostitutes. After a recent doctor check-up, he discovered that he contracted HIV. The client informed the psychologist the next session. After further inquiry by the psychologist, the client reported that he was having unprotected sex with his wife. HIV is a transmittable virus that can ultimately lead to AIDS and death.

Based on the case study answer the following problem:

A) Can the psychologist break confidentiality based on the "duty to protect"?

Provide a well thought out response. Short responses will not receive full credit.

B) Are there any legal obligations for the psychologist to break confidentiality?

C) Does the type transmittable disease (i.e. Chlamydia, herpes, etc) make a difference if you can break confidentiality or not? Keep in mind that not all sexually transmitted infections lead to death.
