The Stages of Research Design

As we look at the different types of research designs, take your research problem statement and research question we might consider and explore what type of strategy or plan might be needed to meet the stages of research design. In preparation for peer review, post your potential problem statement and research question, and identify your strategy.

Response Guidelines

Respond to at least two learners. Help them determine if their strategy will work or not work and why. Your responses should be substantive and do at least one of the following:

• Ask a probing question.
• Offer a suggestion.
• Elaborate on a particular point.
• Provide an alternative opinion.

In your responses, reference the assigned readings and other theoretical, empirical, or professional literature as needed to support your views and writing.

Research Design: An Overview

Introduction

The general research process contains three major stages: (1) exploration of the situation or problem, (2) collection of data, and (3) analysis and interpretation of results. A research design is the strategy or plan for the study. The strategy or plan specifies the methods and procedures for the collection, measurement, and analysis of data.

• Competency 5: Compare foundational theories and concepts from the business literature that support stated business problems, research purposes, and research questions.
• Competency 6: Research acceptable methodological approaches that support stated business problems, research purposes, and research questions.
• Competency 7: Analyze different approaches to the creation of literature reviews that support applied business research.

To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:

1. Analyze the basic stages of research design.

2. Identify the major descriptors and types of research design.

3. Describe the relationships between variables in research design and the steps for evaluating those relationships.
