Trade unions -the labour relations act of Kenya 2012 defines a trade union as an association of employees or employers whose principal purpose is to regulate relations between employees and employers.

This trade unions also serve other purposes that are key to employees and employers like negotiation of wages and working condition terms, taking collective action where all stakeholders come together and combine efforts to reach a goal shared by all to enforce the terms of collective bargaining which is a process of negotiation between an organizations management and a trade unions representatives which gives bargaining power to the organizations employees on various fundamental rights, and to raise new demands on behalf of its members and to help settle their grievances.
