Term Case Study

Description of the situation:

The universityis seeking to provide a new busservice to students around the campus. Traditionally the bus service would cover specific locations (bus stops) following a timetable. The new service is designed to add more flexibility; students can use a mobile phone application to register a trip up to an hour before the departure of the bus shuttles. So every hour the transportation office decides based on the requests received on the number of bus and their itineraries. The overall objective being to minimize the time it takes to serve the students and increase the efficient use of the university resources. It has been agreed with the students' council that

  1. the buses will first pickall students then dropped to their destinations,
  2. only students who register a trip can be accommodated in the bus.

AUS transportation department operates the following bus type

Decisions to be made
The transportationSupervisor (Mr. H. Pinto)would like to know how to best manage these changing requestswhile serving the students' needs as well as optimizing the management of the university resources. In order to help him, you need to determine

(i) The number and type of buses to be used at 7:00 AM.

(ii) The number and type of buses to be used at 8:30 AM.

(iii) A methodology to determine the number and type of buses to be used given the received requests.

Take into consideration the following:
1. All buses shared the same parking when they are not in used.

2. Any missing data or information should be assumed and clearly justify.

3. Based on your assumption in2, formulate the problem using one of the method or approach studied in class (Integer Programming or Dynamic Programming. Note that both can be applied to solve the problem).

4. Solve and determine the optimal solution;

5. Use the project guidelines to prepare your report and presentation.
