Comparing Features of MySQL and Firebird

MySQL Workbench is considered as a unified visual tool that is normally used by developers and database architects. It provides all-inclusive administration tools used in the configuration of services, backup, SQL development, user administration and data modeling. In terms of designing, MySQL Workbench facilitates the management of the database, visual designing, modeling and generation by developers or data architects.

In addition to that, it also has visual tools that play the role of creating, optimization as well as the execution of SQL queries. Furthermore, MySQL Workbench has a visual console used in administering MySQL environments for the purposes of gaining better visibility into databases. The toll is also used in in the configuration of servers, carrying out back up, recovery, viewing of database health and carrying out the inspection of audit data.

On the other hand, Firebird relational database management system is considered to perform more excellently ranging from an embedded, single-user model to enterprise-wide deployments with numerous databases that run with hundreds of simultaneous clients.

Firebird is known to support a wide range of hardware and software platforms such as Windows, Linux, MacOS, and Solaris among others. In addition to that, Firebird has a unique feature in terms of multi-generated architecture that facilitates the development and support of hybrid OLTP and OLAP applications.

It, therefore, serves as an analytical as well as operational data store since readers do not in any way block writers whenever they are accessing the same data. Other features of Firebird include flexible transactions management, possession of user-defined functions and it also has a high compatibility with ANSI SQL.

1)Your posted got me looking at the popularity of Firebird versus MySql. I haven't run into companies using Firebird but I'm sure they are out there. Poking around, looks like MySql is much more popular. Good post -- gets you thinking about what could be used when going with "free" DB).

2) Nice research. When I was reading your resource, every feature looks excellent in Firebird. But why so few developers know and use Firebird? Why isn't it as popular as MySQL? I tried to find some documents about disadvantages of Firebird, but I could not find. I found it, but they were old articles.
