Length : 750-900 words.INSTRUCTIONS

Write a traditional 2-4 page essay (typed/doubled-spaced), responding to only ONE of the "PROMPT OPTIONS" listed.

When necessary please include specific examples and/or direct quotations from The Tortilla Curtain to illustrate/justify your claims. I will be assessing your essays for pertinent examples representative of the ENTIRE novel and discourage you from focusing on just a single section.

In other words, demonstrate to me  that you have completely read this book through your choices for support.

Organization:
Your response to your chosen prompt (listed under "PROMPT OPTIONS" on the reverse side of this handout) should conform to the traditional essay structure (i.e.. introduction, thesis, several body paragraphs, and conclusion) as well as MLA formatting conventions (i.e., double-spaced, size 12 Times New Roman, and so on).

Revision/Editinig:
After you have completed your essay, take time to read through your response to ensure that you have an effective method of organization-including smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs-and clear communication of your ideas. Also, before you submit your final exam via iLearn's SafeAssign link, remember to assess your writing for proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, and style conventions, and make any necessary corrections or adjustments.

Evaluation:
I will be looking for a solid thesis, clear organization [a logical order and clear connections between ideas], completely explained ideas [clearly stated, well developed, and convincing points], and good basic writing skills [use of proper grammar and formal language style].

Prompt Options:-

1. One can argue that certain characters in The Tortilla Curtain experience a loss of innocence. Given this premise, choose one character and discuss ways in which he or she loses his or her innocence. To focus your essay, please craft a thesis statement that clearly presents your position.

Tortilla Curtain written by T.C. Boyle PLUS outside references as needed

2. Write an essay exploring any ONE concept in the novel, relying on Boyle's use of motifs to support your response. You may use relevant contemporary examples to help support your thesis. Some concepts you may want to consider are RACISM, NATIONALITY, IMMIGRATION, VICTIMIZATION, GENDER ROLES, CIVILIZATION (vs. Nature), or the AMERICAN DREAM. Some motifs you may want to address include pilgrims, animals (birds, snakes, coyotes, etc.), walls, war, water, cars, labor (physical/mental), fairy tales, a "fall"/hell and/or luck. To focus your essay, please craft a thesis statement that makes a clear claim about your chosen concept.

Tortilla Curtain written by T.C. Boyle AND Crash written and directed by Paul Haggis (co-written by Bobby Moresco)

3. At the beginning of The Tortilla Curtain, Delaney accidentally hits Candid° with his car: "For a long moment, they stood there, examining each other, unwitting perpetrator and unwitting victim." The film  Crash begins on a similar note, also opening with a vehicular accident. How does the concept of ACCIDENT and/or CRASHING relate to the various themes in both these works? In what ways do these encounters come full circle in the end of both works? What overall message do T.0 Boyle and Paul Haggis seem to be expressing through their conclusions? To focus your essay, please craft a thesis statement that makes a clear claim about how crashing conveys meaning in both the novel and the film.
