Case Study (Part A):
Case Study: Advanced Manufacturing Technology
Objective:
The objective of this case study is to provide you with an exposure to new emerging technologies in the field of manufacturing processes. You are required to research and write a term project that covers the major aspects of a manufacturing technology assigned to you.
Each group will select one topic from the following list and work independently. You are encouraged to use library, internet, workshop, or manufacturing industry in your vicinity. The written report in acceptable format will reflect your research and findings (see marking scheme for details). Oral presentation of your work will reinforce the evaluation method of the written work.

Case Study (Part B):
Selection of a Manufacturing Process for a given component
Objective:
Assume that you are working as a manufacturing engineer for a big production plant. The plant has a capacity to produce more than 1500 components by any process per day. A customer approaches you to manufacture a component (examples are shown below). He has given you the choice to select any production process with constraints of 1000 components per day at a minimum cost.
Each group will select one component from the following list and work independently. You are encouraged to use library, internet, workshop, or manufacturing industry in your vicinity. The written report in acceptable format will reflect your research and findings (see marking scheme for details). Oral presentation of your work will reinforce the evaluation method of the written work.
To calculate cost assume:
(1) The raw material and tooling equipment are supplied by the customer.
(2) The total time for process the part (including set-up and other indirect labor cost) is AED100/hr. The direct labor cost is AED 10/hr. The factory overhead rate is 250% and the corporate overhead rate is 600%.
