Assignment covers Learning Outcome : Describe the impact of IT business functions and structures.
1. Assignment 1 is an report-style assessment designed to assess your understanding of business entities, structures, functions, environmental influences and the role IT/IS plays within an organisation in terms of both functioning and outputs. The headings you will use in your report will include: Business overview; Organisational structure; Key functions; Information systems; Internal and external environmental conditions.
2. If you use information from websites, YouTube, books, journals, newspapers and so on, you must acknowledge the source of this information using the APA referencing format for both in-text citation and for the reference list. Please see your APA instruction guide to ensure you use the correct formatting. You’ll find this guide under “My Open Polytechnic” “Help with your studies” “Referencing Tools”.
Assignment guidelines
Choose an existing IT company to use as a case study: this can be your existing place of work or a local/national/international organisation that interests you. Some suggestions of New Zealand-based IT companies you could base your case study on include Trademe, 2degrees, Xero, Jade, Datacom.
1. Provide an overview of the business you’ve chosen, including a description of the business entity (for example, sole trader, partnership, limited partnership, company, trust, franchise, joint venture). In your overview, include details such as what the business does, where and how they sell their products/services, and who their target market is.
2. Provide a diagram of the type of organisational structure the business uses (if you can’t find this information, provide a diagram of how you think it would be structured based on the type of business it is and the services it provides).
3. Describe the key functions you believe match the business’s operations.
4. Describe how the information systems or IT services the business provides support business operations.
5. Describe any internal and external environmental conditions that the business operates within and may be affected by. Include in your discussion any national or international influences that may be occurring at the time.
