Assignment

The masks, headdresses and sculpture, each one of you was assigned to study and analyze six works of art and the one of your own choice from these collections. Please refer to the following questions when writing your narrative for the museum paper and make sure that you answer all of them to the best of your ability.

Analyze the sculptural nature of each work in terms of subject matter, its form and what the artist was trying to say through it. Does the mask or headdress have distinctive characteristics that stand out from the other objects around in the display case? If so, describe them. What does the piece of sculpture tell how the artist saw the world? Analyze how the artist designed his work in terms of mass and void, sculptural form and use of materials. Many of the masks and headdresses that you were asked to study were made with a particular culture ceremony in mind, such as initiation rites for young men. Be sure to include information regarding this. And lastly, what do you liked or disliked about each mask or headdress that I asked you to look at and why?

Assignment:

Write about four of the six pieces that I assigned you to study, plus the one of your own choosing,(the pic is in the pic series) for a total of five pieces. A paragraph on each mask or headdress is sufficient. Be sure to check out the collection section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website. If you go to the Arts of Africa and Oceania collection, enter in the accession number for the work of art that you were assigned, information will appear for that object. When formatting your paper, please make sure that the body of your text is double-spaced.
