Assignment: Information Technology for Users in Organisations

Purpose

• Demonstrate an understand of the basic concepts of ICT as they are used in organisations and society, including the evolution of the role of ICT in business organisations and society.

• Describe the information technology and communications technology infrastructure employed by business organisations.

• Describe the business and information management processes and functions for which ICT is used in organisations, and in which ICT professionals are involved.

• Demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of individual and organisational stakeholders in the specification and development of ICT systems.

Description

This assignment will provide an opportunity for students to investigate and analyse current issues with ICT systems. Students should research the given topic and investigate the way that businesses are using the technology (ICT) to improve their productivity.

Students, in groups of three (3), will prepare a 1,200-words research report based on their research into the topic given in page 4. This assignment will require each group to research using resources such as books, magazine, newspaper articles, academic journals, and the Internet, then write a specific report. The group must also present their work using PowerPoint slides in a scheduled week 11 lecture. Each group should present for 15 minutes. The presentations should be clear and concise.

The purpose of this assignment is to enable students to critically evaluate some of the ICT systems used in the industry and gain some experience of researching, and presenting their findings in a meaningful way.

WRITTEN REPORT

The assignment will take the form of a fact-based academic report. Your aim will be to produce an opinion about the research. You will have the opportunity to discuss your research with your tutor in workshop sessions to make sure you are on the right track with your research and report writing. Your cover page should include a word count.

Preparing a research report means following a formal pattern of investigation, analysis, and fact finding. Prepare evidence about the topic, discussion, and then conclusion.

Abstract

This is NOT an introduction - do NOT describe what you are going to do. The first sentence should describe the topic being researched. You should provide a brief summary of your main findings and research so that the person reading the report knows its main purpose.

In this section you should state the problem being studied. You should also discuss the purpose and scope of the report and the sources of the information that you have used. That is, you should provide an overview of what you intend to write about in your report, so that the reader can anticipate how you are going to present the material and what it will consist of.

Discussion

Your discussion should focus on the following points:

• Review of the current implementation of the ICT technology you are researching;
• You should discuss the steps you took to investigate and solve the problem;
• The advantages/disadvantages to organisations if they use this technology;
• You should have an analysis of the findings you have made based on the data and facts. Specifically, try to answer the following questions;

1. How did ICT help the organisations evolve (no technology days to nowadays)?
2. What is the latest technology you intend to employ in your organisation?
3. How many people will you be employing in your organisation, and how they will be using the technology described above?
4. What are your plans to receive feedback from your customers, employees, and suppliers, to improve your organisation in future?

Conclusion

The conclusion you make should be a consequence of the data/facts that you have analysed in the discussion. Please note that you should not introduce any new facts/data in this section.

There should be an explanation of why you have reached these conclusions. References

Any references in the reference list must have been used as an in-text citation in your report. Also any in-text citation reference source must also be included in the reference list.

Provide references in IEEE style. A minimum of 12 references is required.
