Assignment - Career Plan and Summary - Video Reflection
This assignment will assess Competency 9: Examine the progression of the health information profession. Competency 10: Understand the evolution of the U.S. health care system.
DIRECTIONS: In Learning Plan 1, you examined The HIM Profession and Careers. For this assignment, you will use what you have learned throughout the course to create a career plan and summary. But wait...!
Instead of writing a reflection paper for this class, I am asking you to create a reflection video. Before creating the video, you must understand what a reflection entails. The International Institute for Restorative Practices in Pennsylvania has developed a reflection paper tip sheet that outlines the steps involved in creating a reflection paper. See IIRP Reflection Tip Sheet. I have also given you access to a YouTube video called Reflective Writing, hosted by Skills TeamHullUni that explains the steps in reflective writing:
These are two excellent resources to guide you through your reflective process. You will go through the same steps as you would for a paper, but in this case the final product will be a video of 3-5 minutes.
Here are requirements to direct your focus for the content of your video reflection:
Begin by reviewing LP1-LP9. Add something to your reflective video assignment that is inspired by information you learned in each LP and be sure to state something for each LP and reflect upon the new knowledge that you have gained as a result of taking this course. Consider the information you learned in this course about health record documentation and the future of healthcare delivery in this country, the evolution of the HIT profession and
how you will incorporate this new knowledge in your career and this becomes your career plan and summary (be specific).
TO go a step further and make the instructions on exactly what you are supposed to complete clearer, be sure to answer the following questions:
What was your impression of the HIM profession when you came into this course? How has that impression changed over the past 11 weeks? What information have you learned in each LP and be sure to state something for each LP.
What do you now understand better about HIM careers as a result of taking this course?
What new goals have you set as a result of this course? What new skills do you want to build in order to be successful in your HIM career?
Why is the HIM career a good fit for you personally? Professionally?
How will you use what you learned during your exploration of Health Information careers to continue building your career plan and documenting career goals? (Be specific: Will you update it at the end of each quarter? Once a year? And how will you document achievement of your goals? Gold star stickers are highly recommended!)
This is not to be a "brain dump" or a summary of the entire course. Review the Tip Sheet and the Reflective Writing video to see what makes a reflective assignment different than a course summary.
Your deliverable for this assignment will be the video (you shoud submit the link to the dropbox for your instructor to review) and a copy of the script that you used to create the video. You can be as creative as you want for the assignment. Here are three different styles of reflective videos. You may feel comfortable with the more formal presentation, or you may want to step out of your box and do something a little more creative. Whatever style you choose, make sure you focus on the items above and that when you incorporate outside materials, you cite them in the video itself.
Style 1: This example reflection is more formal in style. You have quite a bit of leverage to be creative in this process!!!
As a final note, review your video in its entirety prior to uploading. Watch for any glitches that might have occurred.
