Answer the attached essay question:-

Write the 800 to 1000 words. 3-4 pages long; Double spaced. Times New Roman Font 12 pt.

Topic Prompt:
How did the Civil Rights movement evolve over time? Identify and explain the different ways in which leaders and participants fought for civil rights. Describe the ways in which the negative and/or positive experiences of civil rights activists led to their participation in at least one other movement.

A successful essay will include:
1. A discussion of the origins of the civil rights movement, ideas that influenced the movement (e.g. Christianity; Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence) and strategies used by participants (supreme court cases; sit ins; marches; direct action.0

2. A discussion of differences among organizational leaders and participants. (e.g. role of women; emergence of black power ideology; emergence of self-defense ideology).

3. One other social movement may include one of the following: the women's movement; anti-Vietnam war movement; Chicano movement; gay and lesbian civil rights movement; conservative movement; American Indian movement.

Your opening paragraph should have a thesis statement. A thesis statement articulates the argument that you will advance throughout the essay.

Write a thesis statement, see:

http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/pamphlets/thesis_statement.shtml

http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/thesis-statements/ A thesis statement:

• tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
• is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.
• directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel.
• makes a claim that others might dispute.
• is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.

Guidelines:
College-level writing is defined as that which exhibits the following characteristics:
• It has clear purpose and thesis or controlling idea.
• The thesis is supported with adequate reasons and evidence.
• It shows sustained analysis and critical thought.
• It is organized clearly and logically.
• It shows knowledge of conventions of standard written English.
• It shows awareness of disciplinary conventions in regard to content, style, form, and delivery method.
