Coursework Assignment 1b is a group work assignment (word count 1000 words and weighted 25% of the overall module assessment).

There will also be peer review of this assignment. Further guidance and documentation will be provided by the tutor and will be placed in Blackboard.

Completing the peer review will enable you to achieve 10marks. See Appendix C & D for the assessment criteria.

Students must be in groups with no more than 4 members. Students may request to undertake this assessment as an individual and must obtain prior agreement from the Module Leader to do so.

You must self-enrol to a group. You do this on the module Blackboard.

Click on the ‘Groups' menu button and follow the steps for self-enrolment. The group will have a ‘closed' discussion area, email facility and can upload the document(s) you need to complete your report. Your group will undertake this assessment in the role of consultants to the management of The Junction Hotel. The Junction Hotel is the running case organisation from the core text.

The group must produce a report of 1000 words (excluding content page, executive summary, reference list and appendix) using the report format shown in figure 1.

1. A critical evaluation of how rational organisational design and bureaucracy can improve organisational effectiveness at the Junction Hotel.

2. A critical evaluation of how rational work design can improve organisational effectiveness at the Junction Hotel.

3. A critical evaluation of how contemporary models of rationalisation can improve organisational effectiveness at the Junction Hotel.

4. A critical evaluation of how the development of effective teams can improve organisational effectiveness at the Junction Hotel.

5. A critical evaluation of how the effective motivation of employees can improve organisational effectiveness at the Junction Hotel.

Guidance:

• Clearly define these issues by reference to theoretical and conceptual frameworks and models.

• Critically analyse and evaluate how these issues are relevant to the effective management of Junction Hotel.

• Make a recommendation to the management of Junction Hotel.

• Write the report using the formal format shown in figure 1.

• For a ‘satisfactory' grade in relation the assessment criteria (see appendix C & D) ‘Content & Range of Knowledge: evidence of reading & quality of sources' you should provide a minimum of 8 appropriate references.

o Ensure all the members of the group have their names on the front of the

report and official Business School front cover.

Study Skills: The importance of connecting the themes together. It is tempting to only look at the topics that are closely associated with a particular assessment question or topic or only read the chapter concerned. However, in practice, and indeed to really understand the theory, it is important to understand how each aspect of organizational behaviour (OB) connects to other aspects. Strong answers show an awareness of the connection between themes. Intelligent management understands the connections between one intervention and other aspects of the organization.

It is therefore essential to appreciate the connections between the themes. By showing these connections you are able to present a stronger level of understanding of the particular topic as it demonstrates an awareness of how the individual theory is impacted by the wider field of OB and the deeper issues that theorist are seeking to explore. Therefore, when you come to write this report (or study for the exam) do not simply focus on one topic alone, but try to make connections back to other themes.
