1) This must be your own individual work. Under the penalty of severe academic consequences you are expressly forbidden to communicate with any living person or institution about the exam problems, directly or indirectly, by any means, or to receive help in any form in answering the exam questions or problems.
2) Use only the class notes and the two books assigned. You are expressly warned against using Internet texts. Again: This must be your work. Every sentence must be your own, unless properly attributed.
3) Please type all text Organize your work smartly and elegantly. If you use tables, use spreadsheets. If you use sketches, make them on computer. There is no excuse for sloppiness in a take-home exam.
4) All submissions must be in clear English. You will not be penalized for minor language mistakes, but do your best to avoid them. Spelling mistakes are not acceptable.
5) In your answers, the bulk does not count. Be short, precise and concise. Confine yourself to the space assigned, but do fill that space - do not waste the opportunity to dazzle me with your knowledge.
6) Begin each problem on a new page. Use one side of paper only.
7) Do not bind your paper in any way. Just submit the pages stapled in the left upper corner.
1. Discuss how you would introduce Lean in a very traditional medium size (about 500 employees) manufacturing company if you were hired as a consultant to do so. 2. Write an essay contrasting the traditional process-village batch-and-queue work organization to Lean flow organization. Include in your discussion all elements in both systems which either promote flow of value adding work or serve as impediments to the flow. 3. Lean places heavy emphasis on respect. Your task is to review all the class notes and extract and organize all relevant elements of respect in Lean (do not limit the discussion to the "People" Module of the notes.) This should be an essay and not a bulletized copy of the notes. Do not exceed one page, minimum font size 11, using Times Roman font, single spacing of lines and 1" margins on all sides. Any text in excess of these limits will be ignored.
