1. Assessment format:

2.( subject )Topic: Hyde Park Barracks , by Basil Spence

3. Length: 2500

A 2500 word essay, comprised of:  title 2500 word essay with referencing (footnotes) o You should visit and use either the RIBA library or the British Library to do research on your building for this essay o You should also use the Knight's Park library and electronic resources in order to find out about the building o If the building does not have very much written about it specifically, then you need to research about the type and historic style of the building. For instance, if you chose a 14th century English parish church, we would expect you to look at the general history of gothic English churches and describe how your chosen building fits into this wider history o The essay can cover some of the following issues about your chosen building: ? an outline of the career of the architect, and how your chosen building fits within this career and the other buildings done by the architect ? if your building does not have a known architect, or in the event that not very much has been written about the building, then you need to research the type and style of building it is (eg a church or a mosque) and relate your building to this ? the building's location and surroundings ? the building's social and cultural history ? how the building changed over time (if it did) ? the history of how and when it was constructed ? the relation of the building to an appropriate aspect of architectural theory - either a general theory of architecture or something which the architect was interested in or wrote ? bibliography ? footnotes ? a site plan of the building, on A4 paper, at 1:1000 or 1:2000, showing all surrounding buildings in black and the building itself in grey. This must be a CAD drawing and must look like this: In some areas of the world you will be able to obtain digital CAD data to use for this purpose; otherwise, you should use Google Earth or a similar internet source in order to trace over your chosen building and the surrounding buildings. ? at least one photograph of the building (which need not be taken by you)

i should write total 3 essay. and first step is due to 10th March this week. and i will draw site map bymyself which is CAD drawing.
5.Assessment description and instructions:
just over a week to complete the first part of your dissertation, the 2,500 word essay as part of the reading architecture module (AR5001).

Please take a moment to reread the 'Dissertation Guide' and 'How to write a Dissertation - Critical Building Study' which I have attached to this email.

It is important that in order to have a successful outcome that you take this information into account together with the information provided to you in my two seminars and the feedback via email that I have sent through to each of the students that have emailed me previously. If you have not received feedback, please let me know.

Please note that unless you email me in the next day or so, I am unlikely to have time to respond to your queries in time for you to integrate this advice into your essay.

Please pay special attention to the method by which you make your submission, which I understand is through Turnitin. If you have any queries regarding this process please contact Tim Gough in advance.

Please note that all referencing etc. must be in the format set out in MHRA, you can access this from the following link :

www.mhra.org.uk/Publications/Books/StyleGuide/

Please note, this is not optional, this is exactly how the essay must be formatted.

Please make sure that you are fully aware of how to format the essay and the method of submission, before settling down to write up.

General Criticisms

i) From the extracts of the essays that have been sent across, there is a general lack of referencing to texts. Where are you getting this information from? If the information is an opinion you have which is shared by another writer then reference this text. If you have an opinion that is being supported by the opinion of another writer then quote them.

ii) Many of you appear to not be looking for or finding key texts on your Architect or on the building for reference. As discussed at the beginning of this project you should not rely on online sources for references or non academic sources such as newspapers.

iii) There is often some repetition. Usually it is best to make each point succinctly once only and then move on to the next point.

iv) The essays often bounce around from one piece of information to another, work at giving your essay a structure in which one point leads on from the next gradually building up a picture of the building.

v) Remember that this is a building study, the amount of research on context is admirable, but remember that you are architects and so the building should take centre stage in the essay. Try not to go into too much detail on a side topic just because the information is available. try to think how has all of this context impacted the buildings design / the buildings construction.

6.Required resource :

Basil Spence designed, and put this building within a timeline that should include Coventry Cathedral, New Zealand Parliament (the bee hive), Queen Anne's Gate and the British Embassy Rome.

Before Tuesday consult the chapter on New Brutalism and the architecture of the Welfare State: England 1949-59 and the chapter 'The vicissitudes of ideology: CIAM and Team X, critique and counter-critique 1928-68.

Both in Modern Architecture a Critical History by Kenneth Frampton

7.Reference style:

Description of the building and location particularly the context of the park

Description of the Modernist / Brutalist Tradition.

Description of the client and the clients motivations.

Description of the original building on the site.

Description of Basil Spence and his previous buildings

Description of the buildings complex challenges, the difficult resolving these, and the various phases of the design.

Description of criticism of the building.

Description of the buildings contemporary condition, failure to achieve listed building status etc. Alternative plans for the site.

Why the building is important / interesting / what does the buildings success or failure mean?

Once you have done this you may discover a narrative thread through which you can develop the essay, and restructure to suite.

Please re read and rewrite your essay, whilst doing so try to think 'what am I trying to say'

Please try not to use too many superlatives such as 'Amazingly'. If something is good describe what is good and why.

8.Assessment Criteria :

9. etc please read the attachments how to write essay. i need total 3. and then add some references of the building photograph for the details
