The reading by Shearouse (2011) discusses five conflict management styles. Many companies sell conflict style questionnaires for use in organizations. For the first week of this module, try your hand at a free questionnaire. Here is one that allows you to identify your own conflict management style based on five styles similar to those discussed in Shearouse (2011):

Report your rating as well as your general impressions about the usefulness of this questionnaire. Were you surprised by the results? Do you think the results are accurate? Would the questionnaire be useful for your organization?

Conflict Managment Self-Assessment

Josiah posted

Good afternoon class,

After taking the questionnaire and tallying up the results, the final result was that I was a representative of a "strong" style of conflict management.

I agree with the assessment to an extent but the way I handle conflict varies upon who it is I am conflicting with and how important the issue is to me. For an example, if I have a conflict with my boss, I may take a different, weaker, stance on my opinion on the issue. Whether I know I am right or not. However, if I have a conflict with my brother over one of our business goals, I may stronger stance and be more assertive.

Same can be said to my investment in the outcome of the conflict. If it's something I am not passionate about or don't have money/time/other resources invested in, then I may take a weaker stance on the issue.

I think that this questionnaire brings up some good points but I am not sure I would encourage my organization to take it, due to the fact that it may not be accurate for everyone. And I really didn't like that the quiz asked for how we "perceive" others during a conflict. I feel like that is exactly what leaders shouldn't do, scrutinize others' ability to handle conflict.
